Programming for Kids

People often ask me for ideas for how to get their kids into coding. The most common answer is to try Scratch ( since it’s easy, taught in lots of schools and best of all, completely free.

Moving on from that I’ve had success with two others recently:

  • Code Combat ( is a great way to combine game play with coding – in the early levels you code your way through a puzzle, later on you can actually pit your bot against others in combat.  Not free, but really enjoyable.  Highly recommended.
  • FlowLab ( is a simple way to make pretty good multi-level games.  Flash based and very expensive if you pay for it, my 9 year old has spent many hours making some pretty good simple games ( eg: out of the free version.

There are lots of others, I’ll add more posts as my kids find ones they like..
